Foot Exams for the Elderly

Routine foot examinations are essential for the elderly, as they are more prone to foot problems that can affect mobility and overall well-being. In aging populations, issues such as poor circulation, nerve damage, and thinning skin increase the risk of ulcers, infections, and deformities like bunions and hammertoes. Regular assessments help identify early signs of conditions such as diabetic neuropathy, arthritis, or fungal infections. During the exam, a podiatrist will check for changes in skin color, texture, and temperature, as well as assess the nails and overall foot structure. They will also examine pressure points, sores, or swelling, which may indicate underlying health problems. By detecting issues early, appropriate treatments can be provided, improving comfort and preventing further complications that could limit mobility and independence. If you are elderly or taking care of an older person, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to set up routine foot exams.

If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Steven Schwartz of Pennsylvania. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs and provide you with quality treatment.

Geriatrics and Podiatry
When people age, some common issues that may occur are bone density loss, dry skin, poor circulation, and rough brittle nails. These issues may also affect your foot health if the necessary steps are not taken to alleviate the problems.

It is important to take care of your feet because feet that are injured or diseased can affect your overall health. Having painful feet hinders your ability to do daily activities or may decrease your willingness to do the things that you need to do.

Visiting Your Geriatrician
As we age, health problems become more likely, so it is essential to visit your doctor for check-ups to ensure that you are doing the best you can to take care of your health. It is recommended to check your feet frequently for any possible cuts, bruises, swelling, corns or any other irregularities.

Taking Care of Elderly Feet
Cracked or dry feet can be treated by applying moisturizer often. It is also important not to wear old socks because the older the sock is, the higher the possibility there will be that there is bacteria there. Wear fresh socks and make sure they fit properly.

Proper foot health means that you can have a more active lifestyle and you will not be bogged down by pain. Foot health also leads to good circulation, which is paramount for overall health.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and the Feet

Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation in the joints, including those in the feet and ankles. It can lead to pain, swelling, stiffness, and deformities such as hammertoes, bunions, and collapsed arches. Over time, the cartilage in the foot joints may erode, causing joint damage, reduced mobility, and difficulty walking. The constant inflammation can also affect soft tissues, leading to tendon damage and further deformities. A podiatrist plays a vital role in managing foot symptoms associated with RA. They can provide treatments like custom orthotics to support foot alignment, relieve pressure, and improve comfort. They can also prescribe anti-inflammatory medications or provide corticosteroid injections to manage pain. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to correct deformities. If you have rheumatoid arthritis, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist regularly for treatment to prevent further joint damage and maintain mobility.

Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. For more information, contact Dr. Steven Schwartz of Pennsylvania. Our doctor will assist you with all of your podiatric concerns.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Chambersburg, and Mcconnellsburg, PA . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Surgery Options for Flat Feet

Flat feet, or fallen arches, is a condition where the foot's arch is either low or absent while standing. Sometimes having flat feet can lead to such discomfort that surgery is required when other treatments do not help. Surgery for flat feet often involves reconstructing the tibialis posterior tendon, which supports the arch. In cases of advanced arthritis, where pain and stiffness worsen, a procedure called fusion surgery may be necessary. This involves fusing bones in the foot or ankle to enhance stability. Recovery from flat foot surgery typically involves a hospital stay, followed by a period of rest with the foot elevated and protected in a cast. After about six weeks, a patient can generally begin putting weight on the foot. Flat foot surgery is a significant decision, and a podiatrist can assess the severity of your condition and guide you through the treatment options available. If you have foot pain caused by flat feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and treatment.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Dr. Steven Schwartz from Pennsylvania. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.
